The Association for Social Media and Higher Education (ASMH) aims to create a community for sharing information, learning, tools and ideas by bringing social media practitioners, scholars and higher education officials together.
ASMH, which is based at The George Washington University in the heart of Washington, D.C., recommends using social media to create real communities of learning and multidisciplinary collaboration in colleges and universities. It responds to prior new media momentum at the University, including:
- GW being recognized as one of the most active Twitter users (Washington Post, NBC, GW Hatchet);
- The University’s very active Institute for Politics, Democracy and the Internet;
- The Graduate School of Political Management’s annual undergraduate student awards for innovation in political service, often for achievements in blogging and multimedia;
- Foreign Policy magazine recognizing the Elliott School of International Affairs’ Twitter handle as one of the top 100 in international affairs;
- And the University launching an online, daily news source, George Washington Today
